DATA RELEASE: School Reform Takes Center Stage in CA Superintendent of Public Instruction Race

May 23, 2014 - The primary race for Superintendent of Public Instruction in California features three candidates with a wide range of views on improving the state's education system. Incumbent candidate Tom Torlakson has been a strong supporter of public school teachers and teachers unions during his tenure, standing against federal education guidelines that call for linking teacher evaluations more closely to standardized testing scores. Challenger Marshall Tuck is a former charter school President who supports measures that are opposed by unions, including linking teacher evaluations to testing and banning seniority-based layoffs. The third candidate, Lydia Gutierrez, is an elementary school teacher who has been critical of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

The California statewide primary will be held on June 3, 2014. The top two finishers in each primary race will appear on the ballot in the November general election.
