DATA RELEASE: Who's Funding the Top Candidates for California Governor?

May 25, 2014-On June 2, 2014, voters in the California primary will choose between more than a dozen candidates for Governor to determine which two appear on the ballot in the November general elections. CA Governor Jerry Brown (received $13.6M in contributions), a Democrat, is running for his fourth term and is a virtual lock to win the most votes in the primary. The contest for second place will decide who runs against Brown in November. According to the polls, the front runners for that spot are Republicans Tim Donnelly (received $713K in contributions), a CA state assemblyman from Twin Peaks and a Tea Party member, whose campaign is financed by a range of small and mid-size CA companies, and Neel Kashkari (received $3M in contributions), a former Treasury Department official and key architect of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), whose campaign is funded by the financial services industry.

A MapLight analysis of campaign contributions from the CA Secretary of State shows the 'Top 5' contributors to the campaigns of Brown, Donnelly and Kashkari and the geographic origin of those contributions: (Click on heading links view candidate's Voter's Edge page or view images in g/email to see charts.)
