Communications Director

MapLight, an award-winning nonpartisan research organization that tracks money's influence on politics, is seeking an experienced Communications Director. This individual will develop and execute a variety of MapLight's communications programs and must possess strong computer, research, analytic, and writing skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop full-scale strategic communications plans
  • Build and execute multi-platform social media campaigns
  • Write media pitches, press releases, and media alerts for distribution across multiple platforms
  • Build on existing relationships and develop new relationships with target media, influencers, and partner organizations
  • Monitor media and news developments
  • Generate story ideas using MapLight's database tools
  • Track media coverage and measure audience reach
  • Compile media lists and manage media database
  • Maintain conference calendar and write speaking abstracts
  • Maintain editorial calendar
  • Respond to incoming media inquiries
  • Effectively manage team of communications interns
  • Update newsroom pages on website
  • Other duties as assigned

Required qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a communications or marketing role; journalism background is a plus; agency experience preferred
  • Track record building and executing impactful social media campaigns across several platforms simultaneously, while coordinating with several key stakeholders
  • Exceptional project management skills with a track record of delivering on objectives
  • Knowledge of politics and the legislative process
  • Experience representing an organization to the public and media, 100% on message
  • Experience developing and executing media and partnership programs
  • Experience building infographics and memes
  • Dedication to 100% accuracy
  • Ability to calmly manage complex workload under tight deadlines
  • Personal dedication to MapLight's mission and work

Desired additional skills:

  • Spanish fluency (highly desired)
  • Experience with SEO and AdWords
  • High proficiency with MS Excel; pivot table experience is a plus
  • Proficiency with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Tableau, and/or InDesign

This full-time position is available immediately and includes health benefits, paid vacation, and salary commensurate with experience. MapLight is located in downtown Berkeley, California (close to BART).
