Data Analyst

MapLight, an innovative, award-winning nonprofit that tracks money’s influence on politics, is seeking a Data Analyst to join its dedicated data team. This position is full-time and based in Berkeley, California.

In this role, you will help turn campaign finance data into compelling stories about the influence of money in politics. You will work closely with both the Data and Editorial teams to analyze legislation and campaign finance data. This role will focus on generating analyses of money and influence for use internally and for external publication, as well as improving the quality and usability of our datasets. You should both have a nuanced approach to qualitative research and be comfortable working with big data.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with excellent attention to detail. You should be a team player able to balance multiple tasks with a passion for bringing political data to life for a general audience.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the collection and maintenance of qualitative data on organizations and legislation.
  • Verify and fact-check data points in Editorial content.
  • Work closely with the Data Director and Communications team to satisfy custom data requests.
  • Generate new findings on the influence of money in politics using MapLight’s data.
  • Contribute to the timeliness and 100% accuracy of MapLight datasets, related web tools, and data analyses through existing quality assurance procedures and the development of new processes.
  • Track changes in campaign finance disclosure regulations and data.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 100% attention to detail; 100% accurate.
  • 1-3 years or more of data analysis or other relevant work experience.
  • Computer-savvy, web-savvy. Professional or academic experience using MySQL and Excel.
  • Demonstrated capacity for finding meaning in messy data.
  • Knowledge of and interest in federal and state politics.
  • Outstanding time management and communication skills. Extremely well-organized.
  • Personal dedication to MapLight’s mission and work.
  • Experience in data driven journalism is a plus.

This full-time position is available immediately and includes health benefits, paid vacation, and salary commensurate with experience. MapLight is located in downtown Berkeley (near BART).
