Identification System To Trace Animal Disease by Maya Perelman, Aug 15, 2008 (7:52am)

This bill calling for mandatory national livestock identification seems pretty controversial, given that a bill calling for precisely the opposite (H.R. 1018: Prohibiting Mandatory Animal Identification) is also on the table for discussion. But as far as consumer safety is concerned, this bill is critically important in its plan for animal disease control; under the bill, the livestock ID system must be capable of tracking all livestock “from the time of the first movement from its original premise to the time of slaughter…in less than 48 hours” so that the authorities can trace back within hours of a diagnosis of animal disease outbreak.
