Calling Card Use Simplified for Consumers by Albina Popov, Oct 2, 2008 (7:24pm)

The Calling Card Consumer Protection Act adds specific information disclosure regulations that calling card companies must follow to better inform their customers of any additional fees or usage restrictions. The FTC testified on September 16, 2008 in favor of the bill on the grounds that calling card providers use misleading advertising to sell their products. Immigrants, military personnel, and other frequent calling card users have claimed that the cards do not provide as many minutes as they claim. Many calling card companies charge maintenance fees after first use of the card as well as extra surcharges for calling at peak hours. This bill, while it would not prevent such fees, does make it mandatory for calling card companies to disclose all relevant information that may affect the amount of minutes a customer receives out of a calling card.
