This bill would have raised the mandatory retirement age of pilots from 60 to 65. Although quite popular (with 315 cosponsors), this bill was opposed by the largest union representing pilots. The rationale behind the opposition was seniority and safety reasons. Younger union members wanted older pilots to retire in order to get better shifts and routes. Although there is no medical evidence that proves pilot’s skills are worse at 65 as opposed to 60, union officials claimed their opposition stemmed from safety reasons. A subsequent bill (H.R. 4343) passed later in 2007 raised the retirement age to 65.
