HR 6193: Improved public access to government documents by Drennen Shelton, Jul 1, 2008 (6:28pm)

The Bush administration has continually used the controlled unclassified information (CUI) status to withhold information from the public. This status has not been uniformly used, and it has been overused in order to avoid providing the public with information. HR 6193 would end this. By requiring a standard format for which all CUI documents will be treated, the public and watchdog groups with have more access to government documents. This bill would also specifically prohibit using the CUI status to withhold or conceal violations of law or in order to avoid embarrassment to officials or government agencies.
