Double Taxation by Karen Chung, Feb 2, 2009 (7:53pm)

Introduced by Congressman Ron Paul (TX-14), H.R. 162 (111th) seeks to eliminate the taxation of Social Security Benefits. Proponents of the Senior Citizens Tax Elimination Act believe that the taxation of Social Security benefits is a harmful form of double taxation that presents unnecessary challenges to seniors who live on fixed incomes. Supporters insist that since Social Security benefits are funded by taxes, it is excessive and unjust to tax them as income. Reducing benefits by taxing them contradicts the purpose of the Social Security Program to provide a pension and a sense of security.
