Only FLAME can prevent forest fires... by Emily Derenthal, Apr 2, 2009 (5:42pm)

The Federal Land Assistance, Management and Enhancement Act (H.R. 1404/S. 561) will designate a specific fund for firefighting, rather than have funding come out of the general U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management budget. Currently, if there is a catastrophic fire, funds are borrowed from other programs and everyone is shortchanged. The FLAME Act also designates funds for fire prevention education, community readiness, and for purchasing equipment and providing training for firefighters.
