GIVE Act Increases Funding for Community Service Organizations by Lauren Christensen, Mar 17, 2009 (1:18am)

H.R. 1388, the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act(GIVE) aims to reignite American’s desire to volunteer by increasing the amount of funding and positions in service organizations like AmeriCorps and SeniorCorps. The bill is designed to make sure that all that desire to volunteer can, and to try and make community service a national priority. The bill mainly focuses on Student and Retired volunteers, and is sponsored by many public and private service organizations. While some are unnerved about the possibility of mandatory community service, the bill only makes one mention of required work. It encourages high schools to make community service and volunteerism a requirement for graduation, and proposes offering incentives to students who make an effort to improve their community. The final thing that this bill proposes is that September 11th be designated a “national day of service”, where citizens honor those who were lost in and helped with the aftermath of the event through personal acts of volunteerism. Overall, H.R. 1388 is a positive bill that puts money back into service organizations that are underfunded, but as with all the stimulus bills, it is important to question how we will acquire the funds.

Senator Kennedy has volunteerism and mandatory confused. Everyone would love to volunteer to help if someone would take care of their children, clean their house, cook their meals and have a car or chauffeur to get them to the location that needs help, like the Senator has/had. Just by printing the opportunities to help in the local newspapers and on TV would be helpful. We don’t need to spend millions more on “volunteerism”. Everything is underfunded, so we, the public, are told.
