Sen. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders (I-Vt.) — Bernie Sanders of Burlington, Vt. was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sept. 8, 1941. Classified as an Independent, Sanders traditionally caucuses with the Democrats but is a self-described Socialist. Sanders earned a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Chicago in 1964. His professional history includes work as a carpenter, writer, college professor, and Mayor of Burlington, Vt., from 1981 to 1989. Sanders was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 6, 1990 and was elected to the U.S. Senate on Nov. 7, 2006.
