Aug. 4, 2010 - The Senate agreed (61-38) to move to a final vote on HR 1586, a measure that would provide $10 billion in funding to prevent teachers layoffs as well as an additional $16 billion for assistance to states. Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, both from Maine, joined Democrats in getting the votes necessary to avoid a filibuster. The bill is attached to the FAA reauthorization bill.
According to the New York Times, the House will be called back from its August recess to vote on the measure.
Union groups in favor of passage gave on average 62 times more in contributions to lawmakers voting 'yes' ($26,984) as to lawmakers voting 'no' ($438).
Teachers unions contributed over 44 times the amount on average to lawmakers voting in favor of passage ($17,796) over lawmakers voting against passage ($405). State & local govt employee unions contributed on average $9,188 to members voting 'yes' with Sens. John Coryn and Judd Greg as the only 'no-voters' receiving any contributions from this interest group with $250 and $1000 respectively.
