Members of the California Assembly on August 24 voted (51-27) to pass AB 1602, a bill that would create a "California Health Benefits Exchange."
Government unions lead the way in favor of passage while health insurance companies advocated against passage. State & local government employee unions interest groups contributed an average of $29,721 to lawmakers voting 'yes,' nine times the amount on average given to lawmakers ($3,394) voting 'no.' Accident & health insurance interest groups gave an average of $11,089 to lawmakers voting against the bill and only $7,156 to lawmakers voting in favor of passage, a difference of 55 percent.
